Welcome to The Friday Wrap for September 22nd, 2017! It was another busy week in Burr Ridge! Here is a link to this week’s video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=duZJBpG_gtg
Motorcyle Accident: A motorcyclist was sideswiped by a car in Burr Ridge on I-55 during rush hour last Friday and the rider flew over the handle bars. He was rushed to the hospital with only minor injuries suspected, largely credited to his wearing a helmet.
Taste of Egypt: The weather was ideal for the throngs of attendees to this year’s Taste of Egypt at St. Mark’s Coptic Orthodox Church! We thoroughly enjoyed the traditional Egyptian food plus “Street Food” this year (Grilled Corn on the Cob and Sweet Potato) and desserts and there were plenty of activities for the kids (i.e. Petting Zoo, Bouncy stuff, etc.) and Camel Rides. (Though, I did not partake in the latter this year.) Hope you made it there!
Ribbon Cutting for New Willowbrook Police Station: The Flag Ceremony was impactful and the new police facility is incredible, but the last display that they added was tear-jerking! Mayor Frank Trilla flew all the way to New York City to obtain one of the remnants of the World Trade Center for their 9/11 Memorial complete with a Memorial Wall of the towering inferno with the names of the victims. On display in the new lobby is the base of an elevator (that he trucked back) from what is believed to be from Tower 1 which is open to the public.
GOPIO Event Held: On Sunday, I attended at the annual GOPIO Meeting which stands for Global Organization of People of Indian Origin where I was also asked to speak on Business Networking . It was held at the Hyatt Rosemont and also attending were several other Burr Ridge residents, State Senator Linda Chapa-LaVia, U. S. Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi and dignitaries from India. The bulk of the attendees were business people from around the area and country, including the new owner of our Hampton Inn & Suites currently under construction.
Municipal Innovation Competition 2017: The DMMC (Dupage Mayors and Managers Convention) held their Innovation Competition 2017 on Wednesday at the Hilton in Naperville. Six municipalities entered the competition, including Aurora, Bartlett, Elmhurst, Naperville, Schaumburg and Woodridge. The award for Best Presentation went to Schaumburg, but the BEST INNOVATION was won by Elmhurst for their “Advanced Life Support Rapid Response Vehicle” entry. Congratulations to my good friend Mayor Steve Morley and his Chief!!
Visit to RICARDO: Knowing that I had not visited a certain BR business and that they recently held a special cook-out for the Burr Ridge Police Department, I just had to stop the Chicago Technical Center (by RICARDO) which is next to the Mars plant. In case you don’t know, they do all kinds of safety testing for combustion engines and even helped design the transmission for the Bugatti and built the engine that broke the Land Speed Record. They are just one more example
Sip, Shop & Save Event at VC: There was a great event held throughout the stores of the Village Center yesterday and the wine, snacks and sales were flowing freely! I even saw managers Mike Rufo (Eddie Merlot’s) and George Fifles (Brookhaven) in addition to another friend, Diane Helmold and her husband who came from Oak Lawn for the festivities and concert!
Hampton Social Update: Build-out of the incoming Hampton Social is continuing at a brisk pace inside and they are still expecting to open up in the Fall! And you may have noticed some changes on the outside? FYI…To match the motif and branding of their very successful restaurant downtown, it was a prerequisite to paint the outside brick white which they are in the process of completing. When it’s done, the contrast will have a similar look to many other successful developments that I’ve seen around the country.
IML Conference and Da Coach: Last, but not least, Trustee Zach Mottl and I attended part of the IML Conference today, including an incredible speech by Mike Ditka, Chicago Bears’ Super Bowl Winning Coach and NFL Hall of Famer! The Illinois Municipal League (IML) event was attended by hundreds of mayors and municipal leaders and vendors and it was held at Hilton Chicago.
VIPER and a Side Note: An incredible car arrived this week at HIGHLINE AUTO SALES that is worth just stopping by to see…if you like awesome, rare cars! Between the color (red) of this 2017 Dodge VIPER and the fact that it’s the last year it was made and has only 300 miles, owner Sam Barakat is considering keeping it in expectation of it appreciating IN VALUE. But…it’s there for now to be admired!
That's a Wrap...make it a great week!
