FRIDAY WRAP for September 7th, 2018

Hello…and welcome to Mayor Mickey’s Friday Wrap for September 7th, 2018!  Sorry for the delay…I’ve had family in town.  Here’s a wrap-up of Burr Ridge news, events and progress!

Chamber of Commerce Meeting Held:
The monthly Willowbrook/Burr Ridge Chamber of Commerce Luncheon was held on Wednesday at the Holiday Inn in Countryside.  After getting various updates and reminders from Debbie Jackson, Mike Quinn and Brad Kmetz, including about the upcoming Chamber Golf Outing on September 18th, our Guest Speaker took the stage to talk about “ACTIVE SHOOTERS IN THE WORKPLACE”.  Willowbrook Police Chief Robert Schaller showed a very riveting film and gave a list of life-saving measures that one could and should take in the event of a tragedy unfolding.

Sterigenics Update in Willowbrook: The EPA (U.S. Environmental Protection Agency) has determined that Sterigenics “achieves and exceeds all compliance requirements set by the EPA” and are NOT an immediate threat to public health and are not considered to be an emergency situation.  But, as a precautionary measure, Burr Ridge is in the process of hiring our own independent environmental consultant to evaluate EPA information from state and federal agencies and assist us in interpreting the reports and assess information from all sources pro and con.  We are committed to the health and safety of our residents and want to better determine what information is Fact vs. Fiction? We will provide an update on what we know and what the Village is doing on Monday and additional information will be made available on the village websites as this process moves forward.

Village Officials Tour Spectrum’s BURR RIDGE SENIOR LIVING:
On a more positive note, thirteen of us (including Trustees Al Paveza and Zach Mottl) received a great tour of what looks like an incredible place to live for aging seniors from Full Memory Care to condo-like apartments and Independent cottages.  It was a great opportunity for Village staff (Doug Pollock, Evan Walter, Julie Tejkowski, Janet Kowal and Michelle Mahlan) and so many Plan Commissioners (Mike Stratis, Mary Prazmarer, Luisa Hoch, Janine Farrell and Joe Petrich) to see the fruits of their labor and watch a project come from drawings and meetings to fruition.

Per the Project Manager Kevin VodaWeis Builders will hand over the keys to the facility to Spectrumon November 5th (3 months ahead of schedule) who will then take several weeks to officially open the 192 Unit complex with 192,000 square feet.  (Wow…it was built in 13 months!)  With Baby Boomers turning 65 years old at the rate of 10,000 per day, it is not surprising we are seeing such expansion and that Burr Ridge has become a popular focal point!

Note:  We were all shocked as one of the young Tradesman (Eric), called the “Best Dry-Waller in the Country” as he walked by, was wearing a T-shirt with these letters across the back: VOTE MAYOR MICKEY.  That was funny!

Pedal-the-Parks Event on Sunday!!
If you'd like to get some exercise, see some great sights, be part of the community, help raise money and have some FUN...join the group on Sunday?!  The Tour starts at Harvester Park at 9 AM...Please see attached!!

On a Personal Note . . .
This week my wife and daughter had a “Tennis Reunion” of sorts when four (4) of the young women (Alysa Straub, Bethany Lynch, Michelle Demeo and Lexi Petrovic) who grew up together playing tennis got together at Wok ‘N Fire…along with their Mom’s (Charmaine, Joy, Rose and Anne…who made it all possible! Also, it was great to have my brother, Joe Straub, in town for a few days this week…which is a rare occasion!  (We are the youngest 2 of 6 children.)

Have a Positive Week,

 Mayor Mickey
